Catering for individual needs through Multiple Intelligences

Most of the educational systems focus most of their attention on linguistic and logical – mathematical intelligence. However, we should also place equal attention on individual who show gifts in other intelligences, such as spatial, bodily – kinaesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal and naturalist intelligence.

We are the first school in Sri Lanka, who introduced and incorporated multiple intelligences theory in to the school curriculum. The theory of MI was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of psychology at Harvard University USA. According to him there are 8 distinct intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adult. These intelligences can be encapsulated as follows.

  • Linguistic :- Focus on a students proficiency in written and speech communication.

  • Logical – Mathematical:-Centers on a person’s mathematical and logical reasoning involving numbers and mathematical thinking.

  • Musical :- Involves with the competency in singing on good absolute pitch, compose songs and play different instruments.DSC 1886

  • Interpersonal :- Persons’ ability to interact with other people and the ability to understand other people’s thought and feelings.

  • Intrapersonal :- Deals the capacity of person to internalize determine, and understand one’s own feelings.

  • Bodily – Kinesthetic :- Involves not only mid-body coordination, but also ability to masterfully handle one’s bodily motions.
